Using the Search Window

The Quagensia® Desktop Application’s Search Window is a powerful and essential part of the Quagensia experience.

Examples of what you can accomplish with the Search Window:

  1. Find all the Quagensia Functions that have the word “channel” in the name, description, or other optional field in which you want to search.
  2. Find all the Quagensia Algos that use any Quagensia Function that matches for the search word “channel” to see actual examples of how these Quagensia Functions have been used.
  3. Find a category of Quagensia Function. For example, searching for “Trigonometry” from the Algo Explorer will return all of the Quagensia Functions in the “Trigonometry” folder of the Algo Explorer, and the search results will then make you aware of the exact location of the “Trigonometry” folder in the Algo Explorer so that you can browse through this Algo Explorer’s folder’s subfolders from outside of the Search Window.
  4. Look up all Quagensia Functions that use or mention a keyword or function in the platform’s programming language. For instance, if you are looking at some NinjaScript® code and see a function named “SMA”, you can search for “SMA” to find the Quagensia N Edition’s function called “Simple Moving Average” which represents this function in NinjaScript®. This is a great way to create a visual, codeless version of a NinjaTrader® or TradeStation® strategy for which you have the code but not a Quagensia Strategy.
  5. Find all of the actions or expressions that both match a search phrase and also are allowed at a specific location in a Quagensia Algo by clicking on that location in your Quagensia Algo and entering a search word in the context menu that appears.

The Search Window can be opened in one of two different “modes” based on where it was opened from in the Quagensia user interface. Each of the two modes serves a different purpose, searches different kinds of things, and has different choices for what you can do with the search results.

Search Window Mode #1: “Algo Explorer Mode”

The Search Window can be opened in “Algo Explorer Mode” by doing a search in the “Search for algos…” text box that is displayed on the toolbar at the top of the Algo Explorer.

When the Search Window is opened in “Algo Explorer Mode”, it is primarily used to find a Quagensia Strategy or Quagensia Function of interest, and then either open the Quagensia Algo file or make a copy of it in a new algo tab.

In this mode, the Search Window allows you to search through all Quagensia Strategies and Quagensia Functions, only Quagensia Strategies, or only Quagensia Functions, and to search for these algos in one or both of the Algo Explorer’s “Algos from Quagensia” and “My Algos” folders.

Each search result returned will be either a Quagensia Strategy or a Quagensia Function. Search results will include neither expression nor action components that are programmed into the Quagensia Desktop Application, such as the built-in “A Decimal Number Entered into a Text Box” expression, “While Loop” action, or “Conditional Trading Logic (If… Else If… Else Block)” action, since these components do not come from Quagensia Function files.

You can open or make a copy of the Quagensia Algo that a search result represents and do a number of other things by clicking on the search result and clicking a menu item in the context menu that appears.

Search Window Mode #2: Only show expressions or actions that are valid at a specific location in an algo.

You can use the Search Window in this mode to locate and insert an expression or action that is valid at a specific location in an algo.

When opened from the context menu that appears when you click on an algo’s workspace at a location that expects an expression or an action, the Search Window will only consider search results that are valid at the location you clicked. For instance, only Quagensia Functions, not Quagensia Strategies, will be displayed.

As a more detailed example, if the location where you clicked requires a numeric expression that is allowed in the internal variables section of a Quagensia Strategy, then invalid results include:

  1. Boolean and text expressions
  2. Action-only Quagensia Functions (i.e. functions that don’t return a value)
  3. Expressions that require market data and so are only allowed in the “When Bar Updates” section

Results will also include any built-in expression or action components. For instance, if you search for “loop” at a location that expects an action and allows loop actions, you will see results for the built-in loop action components, such as the “While Loop” action.

You can add the Quagensia Function or built-in expression or action that a search result represents to the location on the algo’s workspace that you clicked by clicking on the search result and clicking on the correct menu item in the context menu that appears.
